Amitabh Bachchan – The icon and living legend of Indian cinema..

    Amitabh Bachan Childhood

The icon and living legend of Indian cinema, Amitabh Bachchan was born to Shri Harivanshrai Bachchan & Smt. Teji Bachchan in a small city of Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh on the 11th of October 1942. No one ever felt that this lanky young man would be making a significant mark in Bollywood and attain the superstar status which not many have achieved. Big B as he is called, started his career with Saath Hindustani in 1969 directed by K.A. Abbas which was not a great success. Signed by Prakash Mehra for movie Zanjeer, which eventually went on to be a super hit, after which there was no looking back for Big B.

Amitabh had established himself as a angry young man only to be tamed by Guddi i.e. Jaya Badhuri. In 70’s they both performed together in as many as 7 movies, in 71 both actors were associated with superhits the same year that was Anand for Amit & Guddi for Jaya. They realized they were in love on the sets of Ek Nazar in 1972. They were courting each other for quite sometime now, but it was just around the time of signing in lead roles for Abhimaan (1973) that they decided to tie the knot and enter into marital bliss on 3rd June 1973. The marriage took place with Bengali rituals with less of fan-fare and away from media glare, which is evident from the fact that the ceremony did not take place at Jaya’s flat in Beach House but at Skylark Building which happened to be a family friends place. Jaya went into a retirement from movies after her marriage.

Amitabh Bachchans on screen chemistry with his co-stars especially Parveen Babi , Rekha & Rakhee was really its moneys worth. The movies with Parveen as co-star which I would mention are Majboor, Deewaar, Amar Akbar Anthony, Namak Halal, Shaan, Kaalia, Mahaan, Do Aur Do Paanch, Desh Premee,. Ganga Ki Saugandh ,Khoon Pasina, Suhaag, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Mr. Natwarlal and Ram Balram were noteworthy hits with co-star Rekha. Kabhi Kabhi, Kasme Vaade, Trishul, Kala Patthar, Adaalat, Barsaat Ki Ek Raat, Lawaaris, Bemisaal with Rakhee.

Success has its own cup of woes and Big B was not spared too with gossips and rumours of his affairs with his co-stars and more especially with Parveen Babi and Rekha. The movie tabloids and magazines were loaded with the masala talks and making quick bucks at the expense of the superstar. But it was eventually a fact that Amitabh Bachchan was lured into the charms of Rekha during their second movie together which was Do Anjaane. After which the hits in the movies they paired spells it all out, even to an extent of their contemplating of marriage. But the sheer pressure from the fans and well wishers, the strong will power of Jaya and the public image he had, forced him to buckle, back track and the couple split. In 81, the movie Silsila directed by Yash Chopra which encapsulated the saga of his affair with Rekha.

But what emerged out of it was a strong family man, a devoted husband and a caring father. Amitabh & Jaya paired together in 2001 in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham directed by Karan Johar. This living legend has been an integral part of the Indian cinema for four decades and seems to be only going stronger.
